Agate is formed from layers of silicon dioxide filling the cavities in other minerals. The layers form in stages, often with high contrast, as riverbeds, ash waters, or other environmental elements change over time. As they fill voids in (mostly) volcanic rock, agates typically form in rounded nodules or protrusions.
Each strand of agate beads is unique, as it is created by filling cavities of different shapes. When the cavity is filled, a full agate is formed. Agate impresses with its incredible variety of color combinations and patterns. Its surprising natural designs have sparked creative ideas in people from ancient times to the present day. It is widely used in jewelry arts. Amulets, necklaces, bracelets, and rings made of agate would bring many benefits to their owners.
When found, most agates are visually matte and require cutting or polishing to reveal their inner colorful bands. The commercial value of natural stones (without any enhancements) is often determined by the bands’ fineness, sharpness, and bold color contrasts.
In the past, agate was carved into cameos, using the natural differences in the colors of the bands to create profiles and scenes. Other uses outside of jewelry include handles, boxes, and other personal hygiene and home decor items.
