The Story of Santa Claus
Santa Claus is typically associated with Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker – a Christian saint who lived in Byzantium during the 3rd century AD. That’s why, Santa Claus is known in English as "Saint Nick" or "Santa Claus."
As a child, Saint Nicholas was a kind and devout Christian whose virtuous deeds earned him the position of bishop at a very young age. He tirelessly studied the Holy Scriptures, spending his days in church and his nights in prayer and reading. Over time, Nicholas became the bishop of Myra.
The saint, in whose honor the feast of Saint Nicholas is also celebrated, is known for his miracles, the most famous of which is saving sailors from a shipwreck through the prayers of Saint Nicholas. For this reason, he is known as the protector of sailors, who often prayed to him in bad weather and storms.
The popular story of the three maidens is also connected to him. The father of the girls had fallen into poverty and planned to sell his daughters into servitude for income.
To save them from dishonor, Saint Nicholas secretly left a sack of gold in their home. The father was overjoyed and was able to marry off his daughters.
How is Christmas Celebrated Around the World?
Christmas is celebrated in different ways around the world. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting traditions from various countries.
Greece
In Greece, our southern neighbor, Saint Nicholas is honored as the protector of sailors. According to legend, he is an elderly man with white hair who wears wet clothes, and sea foam drips from his beard. This image is the prototype of the modern Santa Claus.
Germany
In Germany, Christmas preparations begin on the night before December 6th. Children leave their shoes outside the door. In the morning, the well-behaved ones find them filled with treats, while the naughty ones find twigs instead.
According to German beliefs, Christ sends his angels to roam the Earth during the night, so children traditionally dress in white and visit houses to wish for health and good luck.
Netherlands
In the Netherlands, Christmas is tied to Saint Nicholas, who arrives on Dutch shores as early as November. During the summer, he resides in Spain, keeping a record of which children behave well and which don’t. As Christmas approaches, he disembarks and rides through towns on a white horse, spreading joy to children and adults alike.
Finland
On Christmas Eve in Finland, there’s an unusual tradition where families visit a sauna together to cleanse themselves before sitting down for dinner. The festive meal begins when the first star appears in the sky.
Italy
On December 24th, Italians celebrate Tree Day. Among their traditions, a common feature is the large Christmas cake called panettone, which is reserved for the Christmas Eve dinner. It is accompanied by porridge and fish (usually eel). The traditional turkey is served during the Christmas Day lunch.
Christmas markets close with an incredible parade on the evening of January 5th, just before the arrival of the witch Befana, who delivers gifts across much of Italy. Naughty children receive only a piece of coal (made of sugar).
Spain
In Spain Christmas is a family celebration. After 10 PM on December 24th, all restaurants are closed. Families gather at home to wait for the midnight Mass.
The feast begins afterward: cod, chestnuts, and turkey in southern Spain; almond soup and goose in the north. A common feature in both regions is the abundance of good wine. The dessert is an almond cake with honey.
