Realistic and Googly Eyes for DIY Crafts and Decorations
If you enjoy making sewn or knitted crochet dolls, 3D comics, scrapbooking projects, or just love crafting various projects for your children, you likely know how animated eyes create the overall image and expression of your characters. In this category, you can find a wide range of googly eyes that can wiggle, realistic glass eyes, doll eyes, cartoon eyes, and more, suitable for adding personality and character to any craft creation, as well as any cute decorative masterpiece!
Variety of Eyes for Wide Range of Crafts
There are several main types of doll eyes. They are classified according to their purpose.
Sew On Eyes
Sew-on eyes are intended for dolls and stuffed toys made of textile fabric or yarn. They have a hole at the bottom for threading yarn, thread, or cord through. They resemble a button in appearance. They can be monochromatic or have movable pupils in their center, adding an extra fun element to your project.
Sew on eyes come in various colors. They are usually installed before the doll or stuffed animal is fully assembled so that the reinforcing stitches remain on the inside of the doll and are invisible. They are one of the most preferred for toys for the little ones, as they are hard to remove when properly secured.
Stick On Eyes
This type of cute, googly eyes have a thin layer of adhesive on their flat backs, which perfectly adheres to a smooth surface. They are suitable for paper, cardboard, and wood projects. There are also eyes for gluing on fabric, but the glue on this type is more durable and usually applied with the hot gluing technique – on ironed fabric.
If the toys to which you attach them are expected to be washed, consider this detail when choosing glue, as water-based adhesives will degrade during washing. For cardboard and paper items, you can use ordinary transparent glues.
Safety Eyes
These little eyes, captivating with their innocent expression, are primarily used for knitted crafts, crochet dolls, teddy bear crafts and other stuffed animals. The screw fits perfectly into the soft yarn and silicone fluff in the toy’s composition. No need to pre-drill, as the threaded winding carves a path for the eyes and secures them in place.
If you’re using safety eyes for your crochet dolls for the first time, it’s good to do some preliminary tests by marking their attachment point, as once placed, they create a hole between the stitches that cannot be erased if removed.
Often they come with safety fastening washers, making them very suitable for attachment to toys for the smallest mischief-makers. Suitable for amigurumi toys, for which the big black eyes are a characteristic and distinctive feature. They vary in different colors, making them extremely used for yarn projects.
Eyes with Pins (Nails)
Most commonly used for textile and knitted dolls intended for older children, as they can be easily removed by the smallest. If you decide to delight a little one with a doll with pin nail eyes, secure them additionally with a drop of glue at the bottom of the eye, so it stays in place upon hammering.
Realistic Resin Eyes
This variety is intended for dolls that resemble real beings. They look exactly like a real eyeball. Thanks to their glass structure, resin eyes have every element that deceives us into thinking the doll is alive. They are favored by crafters who make dolls from plastic, porcelain, and even polymer clay.
Did You Know?
The only dolls without eyes are the Pelena dolls. In the past, they were made as amulets associated with religious beliefs rooted in Russian traditions. The rule of having no eyes is linked to the belief that if eyes are placed on the doll, it will no longer serve as an amulet, and forces that can "peek" through the eyes might inhabit it. Today, these types of dolls continue to be made, and although they no longer have a religious significance, they are liked by collectors and occult enthusiasts.
