Baskets and panners for decoration
Baskets and their panner cousins are woven lattice vessels. Traditionally, they are made from natural materials such as bamboo, wood, different types of grasses or reeds, branches or wicker, although nowadays you can also find plastic ones.
Usually, baskets are made by hand in many different variations - baskets with or without lids, some with a cloth inserted in them, and others.
Baskets are most often made from a variety of fibrous or pliable materials – anything that will bend to take a certain shape. Examples of plants used as such are: pine, willow, oak, straw, vine, grasses, etc. A wide range of products can be made from them such as baskets, boxes, bags and huge baskets for the hot air balloons.
The baskets are perfect for collecting fruits, fish and other foods.
A little history about baskets
Basket-weaving, or so-called basketry, is a very old and, unfortunately, slightly forgotten craft that is still practiced in Bulgaria. Before the invention of woven baskets, people used tree crust to make small and simpler baskets. These baskets were used for storage and transportation, but they had a major drawback – they fell apart after only a few uses.
To address this inconvenience, our ancestors began weaving strips of tree crust or other plant material to strengthen the baskets. This led to the creation of baskets as we know them today.
Another interesting fact is that the original purpose of baskets was to serve as multifunctional containers for carrying, storing, and organizing various materials, objects, and tools. However, different types of plants grow in different places and regions around the world. This has resulted in a wide selection of materials and different weaving techniques. Each plant, whether it is rattan, palm tree, grass, or deciduous, requires a specific method of twisting and plaiting to create a basket.
Because of this, basket weaving has become a true art that offers artistic freedom and a wide range of colors, shapes, sizes, materials, patterns, and details for creative basket makers to explore.
Material
The most commonly used material for making baskets is rattan. It is very flexible and when woven correctly is also very strong.
Another popular plant used to weave baskets is the vine. It is readily available and abundant. The only problem seen with this type of material is that the vines are different in size and shape, but they can be altered in a certain way to be convenient in the production of both traditional and modern baskets.
Wicker is another type of material used by basket makers. Usually, all baskets and panners woven from wicker are called "woven", although there is another popular method of making wicker baskets, the so-called "twisting".
A strong feature of most baskets is that they start with a base, which can be woven or wooden.
The variety of patterns, shapes, colors and weaving styles is impressive. Interestingly enough, to achieve a multi-colored or patterned effect, basket makers first dye the twine and then begin to weave everything together in intricate patterns.
Use
Apart from the purpose of convenience in collection, storage and transportation, baskets are also used for aesthetic purposes. They always add inimitable charm and coziness to the home. They help with the organization of your belongings or serve as the basis of a very beautiful and original gift.
Here are some ways to use your baskets:
- Use rectangular shaped baskets as drawers and place them on shelves, cabinets or other furniture to store various things;
- Place larger baskets on the ground to store knitting supplies, house slippers or other similar small items that would be difficult to arrange on shelves or cabinets;
- In the deeper round or oval baskets, you can put children’s toys or use as a basket for dirty clothes;
- Smaller decorative baskets can be used to store fruits, candies, sweets and other foods of your choice. Another interesting application of the basket is to fill it with various gifts, chocolates, a bottle of wine or champagne and give as a gift for a birthday or other special occasion.
- Another great idea is to place a small pot of plants in the basket to make your home even more unique;
- You can use to organize and store cosmetics, office supplies, games or other small items that would otherwise be scattered everywhere;
- For a clearer organization of fruits and earthy vegetables, and also of all smaller things in the kitchen, such as jars of spices, teas, glasses, utensils, snacks and other foods.
Certainly, baskets used in this way will not only help with organization, but also make your everyday life much more comfortable and pleasant while also enriching the decoration of your home.
