Snap Buttons – The Modern Revolution of Fasteners
Snap buttons have revolutionized the realm of fasteners, paving the way for a new era in button history that diverges from traditional notions! The textile industry offers a rich variety of colors and shapes of buttons, which today we consider more a practical than a decorative element. However, this was not the case in ancient times. It is fascinating to note that buttons are much older than we think.
Historical facts speak of their origin with the invention of clothing. Artifacts over 5,000 years old have been found in Pakistan, where the role of a button was played by a well-formed shell attached to the garment. This is considered the oldest discovered button in the world.
Other materials used in antiquity for making buttons were bronze, bones, and wood. The 13th century saw a real revolution in the sewing industry when this tiny accessory began to be produced and found application in almost all clothing.
Today, buttons are an inseparable friend of tailors. While the 19th century favored ornate and impressive buttons, the industry today focuses on more concealed and simple designs. One of the most used are the so-called snap buttons.
They are practical, as they do not even require the presence of a buttonhole and often remain unnoticed in the garment’s design. Snap buttons are especially suitable for jeans and denim clothing models, but they also combine wonderfully with other types of textile fabrics.
The Diversity and Utility of Snap Buttons
The vast array of snap fasteners on the market is immense. You can encounter everything from completely hidden to clasps with different shapes and prints. Particularly attractive are the snap buttons that look like a fashion accessory or a brooch. They are a perfect addition to solid-colored clothes, as they provide a main accent and even a sense of aristocracy.
How to Install Snap Buttons?
If you are a beginner, it might seem a difficult technology, but in practice, installing snap buttons is not a complicated process. The pattern of the small clasps will guide you through what exactly is required from you.
Here is how to easily and quickly attach them to the desired surface:
- Choosing the right fabric. It is important to know that for this type of button, the fabric on which you will be attaching them needs to be double or reinforced to withstand the pressure. Such are denim fabrics, leather, and suede. Ordinary fabrics to which a snap button will be attached need to be at least double-layered.
- Tools. If you have already acquired buttons and are wondering how to attach them, you will need special pliers, with which their fixing is as easy as child’s play. They are easily found in hardware stores or textile shops. If you still do not have such, you can use ordinary pliers.
If the upper part of the snap button has a specific design and acts as a visible accessory, then you should be careful not to damage its surface. We recommend covering them with an additional fabric that will protect them from the pressure of the pliers.
- Mounting. Once you are equipped with the tools, place the snap button in the desired position. You can mark the spot with chalk and proceed to sewing it. Then, mark the sewing point for the other half of the button. For this purpose, the middle part of the upper half of the snap button is marked with tailoring chalk and pressed to determine the correct position of the other half. For fabrics where this chalk is not visible, a pin is used to mark the upper half of the press button in the part where the button will be fastened.
- Done! You now have a manually sewn snap button, quick, easy, and fun.
In mass production, snap button attaching machines are used, with the help of which the snaps are fixed to the fabric in seconds. But for individual projects that do not require speed and a large quantity, handy materials do just as good a job.
Did You Know?
There is a National Society of Button Lovers, which unites all collectors of small clasps worldwide! Every three months, it publishes a bulletin with the rarest buttons in the world. The most sought-after are buttons from World War II, with segments of the armed services painted on their surface. Some specimens reach colossal prices due to their rarity.
