Amethyst – Legends, Meaning and Symbolism
Once upon a time, mortals angered Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, by not acknowledging his greatness. Enraged by their audacity, he vowed to show them his power and punish the first mortal to cross his path. The beautiful maiden Amethyst was the first to come before the eyes of the angry Dionysus.
True to his promise, the god of revelry released lions that attacked the maiden. Her cries reached the temple of the goddess Diana, to whom Amethyst had gone to pay homage. Hearing the girl’s cries, the goddess tried to protect her by turning her into a crystal figure of pure quartz.
Deeply remorseful for his deed, Dionysus began to shed bitter tears. They flowed into his chalice of amber wine, which spilled over the petrified maiden. Thus, the statue acquired a captivating violet sheen.
Another legend attributes the remarkable beauty of amethyst to Saint Valentine, who possessed a ring with the purple stone, on which Cupid was depicted.
Even Cleopatra wore jewelry adorned with the magnificent amethyst stone.
The name Amethyst means “not intoxicated” and comes from the Greek word “amethystos.” This is why amethyst is considered a strong antidote to alcoholism. The ancient Greeks believed that anyone who drank from a cup made of amethyst could not get drunk.
