Metal beads, pendants and spacers for jewelry
Metal beads have two advantages over other types: they hold up to long wear and come in a wide range of finishes — silver, gold, antique and gunmetal. This makes them practical and stylish jewelry elements.
Consider bead weight when planning your next project. A metal bead necklace fits closely around the neck, while one made with wooden or glass beads would hang more loosely. That’s why most makers use them as accents, spacers and connecting elements rather than as the base of a whole strand.
Common beginner mistake: When mixing metal beads with lighter materials — wood, acrylic, plastic — the heavier metal elements should be distributed symmetrically on both sides of the necklace or bracelet. If they’re grouped on one side, the piece rotates while worn and the accent you planned for the center ends up off to one side of the neck or wrist.
Main types
Beads for stringing are the main building blocks — round, cylinder, cube and tube shapes, typically 4–10 mm in size with a 1–2 mm hole. Spacers are flat or disc-shaped and sit between the main beads to set the rhythm and prevent them from rubbing against each other — especially important when working with shiny stones, which would otherwise get scratched.
Pendants come with a ready jump ring for attachment and work as the central accent on a necklace, bracelet or keychain — available in shapes such as hearts, crosses, keys, nautical motifs and zodiac symbols. Special types include small bells and chimes — a great choice for Christmas decoration and for martenitsi (traditional Bulgarian red-and-white spring charms), where their characteristic sound adds an extra element to the traditional design. For projects where you want to avoid tarnishing over time, steel beads are a more durable choice than zinc alloys with a coating.
Practical tip: Antique finish darkens in the deep grooves of the ornament and leaves the raised areas brighter — that’s why ornamented beads look more legible and three-dimensional in antique than in a plain silver or gold finish. With smooth geometric shapes, the opposite is true — a polished finish gives a cleaner, more modern effect.
What they’re used for
Metal beads are often used to achieve boho, ethnic and vintage styles, especially in combination with natural stones and leather. Necklaces and bracelets in antique silver work well with brown and black tones in clothing, while gold-tone metals bring out warm colors and printed outfits.
For martenitsi, metal pendants and bells add a lasting accent that stays valuable beyond the season — unlike textile elements, which wear out. For Christmas decoration, small bells and figurines go directly onto trees and wreaths, while connecting elements allow more complex ornaments to be assembled.
How to choose
By finish and color
A silver-tone finish works universally with almost any color of base beads or cord. Gold brings out warm tones — red, amber, tiger’s eye — but doesn’t combine well with cool shades like mint and light blue. Antique finishes — silver, copper or bronze — add warmth without standing out too much, which works especially well for vintage projects. When using several finishes in one project, choose ones in the same color temperature. Antique copper looks natural combined with antique silver, while antique copper with polished gold often creates visual dissonance.
Alloy or steel
Zinc alloys with a coating are cheaper and come in a wider variety of shapes and finishes. Steel beads are more resistant to tarnishing and scratching, but are available in more limited designs. For a piece worn every day, steel is the more reliable choice; for an accent element for a special occasion, coated alloys offer more stylistic range.
What to combine with
The classic combinations are with natural stones — antique silver with lava or hematite, polished silver with turquoise or agate. Glass beads and crystal spacers work well with gold and chrome finishes for a brighter, festive effect. Leather and textile cords are the most natural bases for boho style — they add warmth to the cool metal tone and visually balance the metal’s weight.
Why EM ART
In this category, we pay attention to details that directly affect the finished piece — durability of the coating, evenness of the hole, cleanness of the casting, and compatibility with cords, strings, jump rings and clasps. This matters especially with spacers and pendants, since they’re often the most visible metal accent on the bracelet or necklace.
For steel beads, we pay attention to the alloy description and the product’s intended use, since this affects durability during wear. Finishes look very similar in photos but are noticeably different in person — antique silver and gunmetal are most often confused.

Frequently asked questions
Do metal beads tarnish over time?
It depends on the material. Steel beads are usually more resistant to tarnishing and color wear, while zinc alloys with a coating can lose the finish after prolonged contact with sweat, perfume or hand sanitizer. For everyday wear, choose steel; for an accent element for special occasions, coated alloys are an acceptable choice if you avoid contact with aggressive liquids.
What’s the difference between silver, antique silver and gunmetal?
Silver is clean, polished and neutral. Antique silver has darker grooves and brighter raised areas — it looks vintage and emphasizes ornament. Gunmetal is uniformly dark gray, without contrast between grooves and surface. In photos, all three look similar, but in person, they have different characters.
How many metal beads do you need for an 18 cm bracelet?
It depends on the size and whether you’re using spacers. For an 18 cm bracelet of 8 mm beads with one 2 mm spacer between each pair of main beads, you’ll need about 17–18 main beads and 16–17 spacers. Without spacers — about 22 main beads of 8 mm. Add about 1 cm to the total length for the clasp, to allow free movement.
How to combine metal beads with natural stones?
Antique silver and copper fit warm tones such as lava, amber, tiger’s eye and hematite. Polished silver works with cooler stones such as turquoise, agate and amethyst. Gold-tone metals lean toward the warm stones. It’s not a mistake to mix, but a good practice is to keep the metal finish and the dominant tone of the stone within the same temperature family.
Are metal pendants suitable for gifts?
Yes — the shapes carry built-in symbols (heart, cross, key, tree of life, zodiac), which makes the gift more personal. For men’s pieces, plates, crosses and figurative motifs are usually selected; for women’s, combinations with crystals or delicate geometric forms. A pendant is easy to swap on the same chain according to the occasion or mood.
