Multi-Color Plastic Beads for Jewellery and Creative Projects
Two-tone plastic beads are acrylic beads in which the base color is combined with a second shade, pattern, or decorative detail. Some are almost entirely white with colored dots, lines, or symbols; others are multicolored or feature a marble effect, letters, numbers, inscriptions, or small graphic elements.
The advantage of these beads is the variety of patterns and designs — dots, lines, letters, numbers, or small figures. Be careful not to place too many patterned beads next to each other — this can make a project look cluttered. The safer approach is to choose a few colorful beads as accents and arrange simpler single-color beads around them. This is why these beads are particularly well-suited for martenitsi — traditional Bulgarian red-and-white spring charms — children’s bracelets and keychains, where colorful and playful combinations are often the goal.
How to add the beads to your project
As a color accent. If a bead has a white base with a color accent such as a dot, line, or small pattern, you can string it in combination with single-color beads. This adds a light detail without overloading the bracelet.
As a ready-made pattern. Designs with dots, lines, a marble effect, or contrasting spots already have their own visual identity. With these, there is no need to add many other patterned elements. They pair best with simpler beads in one of the pattern colors.
As a message. Beads with letters, numbers, inscriptions, and symbols are ideal for personalised bracelets, martenitsi, and gifts. Use them when you want to spell out a name, initials, a date, or a short word. It is best to make the message the centrepiece of the project and let the remaining beads support it.
As a shape, not just a color. The category includes rounds, cubes, cylinders, hearts, flowers, and other figures. Shape changes the feel of the finished strand: rounds look softer, cubes more structured, and figurines more playful — suitable for children’s or seasonal projects.
Practical tip: before you start stringing, pour a few beads onto the table and arrange them without a cord. This lets you see whether the patterns repeat well, whether the inscriptions read correctly, and whether the colors work together. With letter and symbol beads, this is especially important — think about how you want the message to read.
A mistake beginners often make: choosing many patterned beads and stringing them one after another. The dots, lines, letters, and symbols start clashing, and nothing stands out. The solution: choose one leading bead type — for example, letters, dots, or figurines — and alternate it with single-color elements.
What are they used for
Two-tone plastic beads are most commonly used for martenitsi. Red-and-white models are especially practical because they carry both traditional colors in a single bead. This gives the martenitsa a modern look and makes it easier to assemble.
They are also suitable for children’s bracelets, colorful necklaces, keychains, bag decorations, and party accessories. For seasonal projects, you can use classic color combinations — red and green for Christmas, orange and black for Halloween, white and pink for birthdays, white and red for Baba Marta (Bulgarian spring holiday celebrated on March 1st).
💡 Project idea — martenitsa bracelet: use red-and-white two-tone rounds 10–12 mm instead of separate white and red beads. String them on a red-and-white cord and finish with adjustable knots or small tassels. The result is a martenitsa with a clear traditional color palette but a neater, more modern look.
What to combine them with
Two-tone beads have a strong color accent. They combine best with simpler elements that highlight the pattern without competing with it. Single-color beads in one of the two colors of the two-tone design are the easiest choice for a balanced strand.
Metal spacers in neutral finishes — antique silver, antique copper, or classic silver — help separate individual beads and set a rhythm in the bracelet. They are particularly useful with designs with stronger contrast.
For stringing you can use cotton cords for macramé and adjustable bracelets, or silicone elastic cord for quick bracelets without a clasp. If you are making a necklace or a fixed-length bracelet, add a metal clasp in a neutral finish.
You can also combine them with other plastic and acrylic beads — for example, transparent, pearl, or metallic models in similar colors. For a more natural look, pair them with wooden beads; for a more sparkling project, add small metal accents.
What we look for when selecting our inventory
For two-tone beads, the most important factors are color, shape, and the quality of the finish. For split-color models, we check whether the dividing line is sufficiently clear. For marble-like models, it is normal for each bead to look slightly different, but the colors should be distinct. For gradient effect beads, we look for a smooth transition between shades.
We also pay attention to the hole size, because it determines which cord or elastic you will be able to work with. If a bead is beautiful but the hole does not match the chosen base, the project becomes difficult right from the stringing stage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can two-tone plastic beads get wet?
Brief contact with water is generally not a problem, as the beads are plastic or acrylic. It is still advisable to dry the finished piece after contact with water and not leave it in a damp environment for a long time. Frequent contact with perfume, alcohol-based products, or harsh cosmetics may affect the color or finish over time.
Are two-tone beads suitable for children’s jewellery?
Two-tone beads are popular in children’s craft projects for their bright colors and fun combinations. It is important to note, however, that beads are not toys. They are not suitable for children under 3 years of age due to choking hazard. For children’s accessories, use sturdy construction and adult supervision.
How many two-tone beads are needed for an 18 cm bracelet?
For a single-strand 18 cm bracelet using two-tone rounds 10 mm, you will need around 18–20 beads. With 8 mm beads — approximately 22–24, and with 12 mm — around 15. If you are adding spacers, a pendant, or a clasp, reduce the count according to the length of those elements and allow around 1 cm for comfortable movement.
Which two-tone beads are best for beginners?
The easiest to work with are round 8–10 mm beads with a clear hole and a simple pattern. They string quickly and combine easily with single-color beads, cotton cord, or silicone elastic. If you are working with split-color beads, arrange them in advance to distribute the colors evenly.
