Beads for jewelry — silicone, porcelain, Shamballa and art designs
This category includes beads made from alternative materials other than glass, metal, wood or acrylic. Here you’ll find silicone beads, polymer clay, porcelain, Shamballa, art beads and cabochons. Each material has a different feel, weight and purpose, so the choice doesn’t start from color alone — it starts from what kind of project you want to make.
Some of these beads are ready for stringing, others you need to glue on a base, and some you can shape and bake yourself. Silicone is light and soft, porcelain is heavier and elegant, polymer clay gives freedom over form and color, Shamballa beads add shine, and art beads work best as a strong accent.
Bead types at a glance
Silicone beads. Soft, flexible and pleasant to the touch. They don’t break easily and you can clean them with soap and warm water. Often used for modern fashion jewelry, colorful bracelets, keychains and decorative accessories.
Important: individual beads are not toys, regardless of the material. For children’s accessories, choose only products with a clearly stated purpose from the manufacturer.
Polymer clay. This is a material you can shape yourself. Mold by hand, then bake according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and it hardens permanently. With polymer clay you can make beads, pendants, figurines, lettered tags or colorful accents. FIMO and Sculpey are popular polymer clay brands, and different lines may vary in firmness, working time and recommended baking temperature.
Porcelain beads. These are ceramic beads with a smooth, often glazed or hand-painted surface. They are heavier than plastic beads of the same size and sit more stably in the strand. They come in classic shapes like rounds and tubes, as well as figurative motifs — fish, cats, flowers and other decorative forms.
Shamballa beads. Round beads with a resin coating and small crystals or decorative elements. Most often used in Shamballa bracelets — macramé bracelets with a square knot, alternating beads and an adjustable length. They are striking enough on their own, so they usually don’t need many additional accents.
Art beads. These are non-standard beads with unusual shapes, interesting finishes, natural elements, resin or a handmade effect. They are typically used as one or two accents in a project rather than as the stand base. Suitable for designer bracelets, necklaces, keychains and decorative compositions.
Cabochons. Cabochons differ from standard beads because they are not strung. They have a flat back and are glued onto a base — for example, a ring, earring, brooch, pendant or decorative frame. You’ll need suitable metal jewelry findings and adhesive appropriate for the material.
The other specific types in this category — textile beads, real leather, faux suede and resin elements — are most often used as accents. They work well in combined techniques but are rarely the base of a whole strand.
💡 Project idea — your first polymer clay bracelet: Mix two colors of polymer clay and shape them into a small log (cane) with a pattern running along its length. Cut it into thin slices with a sharp knife and make a hole in each bead with a toothpick or needle. Bake according to the instructions on your specific polymer clay — temperature and time depend on the brand, line and thickness. You’ll get beads with your own color combination, no two exactly alike.
Quick choice by project type
- You want a soft, lightweight material with a modern look → choose silicone beads
- You want to shape and color the beads yourself → choose polymer clay
- You’re going for an ethnic, vintage or hand-painted effect → choose porcelain beads
- You want ready-made shine and an adjustable macramé bracelet → choose Shamballa beads
- You need one strong accent in an otherwise simple project → choose art beads
- You’re making a ring, earring, brooch or pendant with a glue-on element → choose a cabochon
⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake: they choose beads based on color alone, without thinking about the material. Silicone is light and soft, porcelain is heavier, Shamballa beads are bulkier, and cabochons aren’t strung — they’re glued onto a base. The fix: first decide what type of project you’re making — bracelet, necklace, brooch or decoration — and only then choose the color, shape and size.
What to combine them with
These beads are often used in mixed projects. Porcelain balances well with glass beads, because both materials have a denser feel. Metal elements — clasps, spacers, jump rings and pendants — help the project look finished. Wooden beads add warmth, especially in boho style, and natural stones such as lava, tiger’s eye and hematite give contrast and a stronger character.
For an easy bracelet, combine silicone or porcelain beads with elastic or stringing cord. For a Shamballa bracelet, use cotton cords 1–3 mm, because they hold the knot stably. For cabochons, choose a metal base with a flat surface and an adhesive suitable for the material.
A handy combination: for a gift bracelet, pick one porcelain or Shamballa bead as the center, add smaller glass or metal spacers on either side, and finish with a suitable cord or elastic. The project looks balanced without becoming cluttered.
What to Choose and When
With these materials, quality is judged differently. With glass beads, clarity and shine matter; with metal beads, finish and durability. In this category each material has its own particulars.
- Silicone — softness, elasticity, smoothness of the surface and a clearly stated intended use
- Polymer clay — consistency during shaping, stability after baking and no visible cracks
- Porcelain — cleanness of the glaze, evenness of the hole, no cracks or sharp edges
- Shamballa — stability of the coating and a firm hold of the decorative elements in the resin
- Cabochons — smoothness of the flat back and a good surface for gluing
In lower-quality variants the decorative elements may loosen faster during wear. So when choosing Shamballa, art beads or cabochons, look not only at the color but also at the surface, the edges and the way the details are made.
Orders and Delivery
You can order online at any time. Keep in mind that the texture of silicone, the weight of Shamballa beads, the gloss of porcelain and the nuances of art beads can be hard to judge from photos alone — when ordering, read the product descriptions carefully. Frequently asked questions
Are silicone beads safe for children?
Individual beads, regardless of the material, are small parts and can be dangerous for small children. They are not suitable for children under 3 years old due to choking hazard. If you’re making an accessory for a child, use only materials with a clearly stated purpose from the manufacturer and a safe construction. Homemade pieces from loose beads are not certified toys.
What’s the difference between polymer clay, modelling clay and FIMO?
Modelling clay and polymer clay are often used as close terms for a material that is shaped by hand and then baked to harden. FIMO and Sculpey are popular polymer clay brands. Different brands and lines may vary in firmness, working time and recommended baking temperature.
Can silicone beads get wet?
Yes, silicone beads usually clean easily with warm water and soap. Dry them well after cleaning. If the project includes metal parts, cord or glued elements, take those into account when cleaning, because not all materials handle water equally well.
What is a Shamballa bracelet and what cord to use with it?
A Shamballa bracelet is a style with macramé knots, alternating beads and an adjustable length through a sliding knot. For the weaving, cotton or synthetic cords with enough thickness are most often used so they hold the knot stably. To start, you can use 1–3 mm cotton cords.
Can you bake polymer clay at home?
Yes, most polymer clays are baked in a home oven, but the temperature and time depend on the brand and the thickness of the piece. Some products bake at around 110°C, others at around 130–135°C. Always check the instructions on the specific package. Don’t exceed the recommended temperature — the material can darken, yellow, or give off an unpleasant smoke.
Which beads are best for a first project?
For a first project, choose larger silicone or porcelain beads. They’re easy to handle, string up quickly and don’t require complex technique. If you want a finished look with little effort, use one Shamballa bead as a central accent and add simpler elements around it.
